A top quote from the Daily Beast‘s Marlow Stern: ”The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which annually honours the best and brightest in cinema with Oscar statuettes, has a long history of screwing up.” I think a few film-lovers might agree.
But Oscar snubs are nothing new, we hear about them all the time. The fact, however, that these 5 male actors listed below have never… EVER… won an Academy Award is just downright criminal. Hence I felt the need to vent.
Pitt’s narrowly missed out on quite a few occasions, as he’s been doing ok for nominations. He’s received four Academy Award nominations (for 12 Monkeys, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Moneyball) and five Golden Globe Award nominations – one of which he won for 12 Monkeys. But for Babel, Inglorious Basterds, Burn After Reading (LOVE him in this) and cult hits Fight Club and Se7en? Nothing in the way of Oscars. Niente. Madness right there.
The ever-eccentric Mr Depp is often described as one of the finest actors of our time, yet the Academy’s failure to recognise him for Pirates of the Caribbean, Sweeney Todd, hell, not even Finding Neverland still annoys me to this day. And is it now all too late for Oscar love? Depp hinted in a BBC radio interview in July that he’s winding down his career.
“I wouldn’t say I’m dropping out any second, but I would say it’s probably not too far away. When you add up the amount of dialogue that you say per year and you realise that you’ve said written words more than you’ve had a chance to say your own words, you start thinking about that as an insane option for a human being…”
You make a fair point, Johnny. Bugger.
I’ve been clear and open about my DiCaprio crush, which is why this snub hurts a little more. All that hard work? All that dedication to epic biopics like The Aviator and J. Edgar? I mean the pay-checks help right, but still… His first Academy acknowledgement will be a LifeTime Achievement Award at this rate.
Ed and Leo are mates. Bet they have a right moan to each other. (Probably not actually.) Edward has been nominated for Academy Awards for his roles in courtroom drama Primal Fear and crime thriller American History X. But come on, to not win for American History X? That’s just sacrilege. You know who he lost to? Roberto Benigni. Yeah, exactly. Who is he.
I love Gary Oldman. Yeah right, so he’s from London and so am I, but that’s really not the point. He is so many ‘industry people”s favourite living actor. Ryan Gosling, Tom Hardy, Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender – these are just some of the stars who’ve named Oldman as their ultimate acting hero. But setting aside some of his earlier work, can I just ask: what happened with Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy? Did he actually lose to The Artist‘s Jean Dujardin? The guy didn’t even say anything.
Ok, so, not funny but you get my point.
Whose Oscar snub has outraged you? Robert Downeys maybe? Richard Burton and Peter O’Toole must have been pretty pissed off too, right? Between the two of them they notched up 15 Oscar nominations but didn’t get a single win…
