Remembering Heath: 5 things you didn’t know about Heath Ledger


Today marks seven years since the death of the much-loved acting talent, Heath Ledger. Here are five personal things about the star you may not have known…

1  Heath was an exceptional chess player.  He won a championship in Western Australia aged 10 and as an adult often went down to Washington Square Park in New York to play against other enthusiasts.

2  Heath’s ultimate hero was Gene Kelly. “There’s something magical about Gene Kelly films,” the star once said. He admired Kelly’s graceful, athletic dancing and even owned a pair of tap-dancing shoes.

3  With his parents being high romantics, Heath was named after the character of Heathcliff in Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights novel. His sister is called Kathy, after the character of Catherine.

4 Heath was a long-suffering insomniac. He struggled to subdue his overactive mind for much of his young adult life. It was partly why he was taking so many prescribed drugs at the time of his death.

5 Counted amongst his closest friends was Christian Bale, Joaquin Phoenix, Matt Damon and US singer Ben Harper, which whom he co-owned a record company.
